My Food Truck Summer

This was my first summer working in Minneapolis and I am lucky enough to work right on Nicollet Mall where most of the Food Trucks in the Twin Cities spend their lunch.  Thanks to Twitter it is easy to follow and find trucks when you need to get outside for lunch.  I tried a variety of trucks and all were amazing and unique.

Turkey to Go
Twitter: TurkeyToGo
Find them at: Nicollet Mall and 6th or 8th
Favorite Food: Turkey Sandwich (plain)

Turkey to Go was the first food truck I tried out since they are actually open all year long, spending the winter in the NorthStar building food court.  The turkey sandwich is absolutely amazing and jucier than anything you will ever try anywhere else!  In the winter they also have Turkey Wild Rice Soup which is so creamy and delicious.  The food here is simple and straightforward.  You won't find weird names or food that you can only guess what on earth it is.  It is true Minnesota comfort food - proof of which comes from the fact that they are the turkey guys from the Minnesota State Fair.

Dandelion Kitchen
Twitter: dandelionktchn
Find them at: Nicollet Mall between 8th and 7th in front of the IDS Center
Favorite Food: Grilled Ham & Brie

I call their food "fancy comfort food."  They take something like a ham and cheese sandwich and substitute brie for the cheddar, add a plum spread and homemade dijon mustard and that is about the time I start drooling.  All their food is a great combination of new and old flavors.  Every day they have a soda which takes a old flavor like lime and add a new flavor like mint and BOOM you have an amazing soda.  The truck usually has a long line so make sure you get out there early!

Chef Shack
Twitter: chefshack1 and shackattacks
Find them at: always moving, check twitter
Favorite Food: Mini Donuts

The Chef Shack has two trucks, Big Red (chefshack1) and the Donut Truck (shackattacks) which is usually the one close to me.  I am going to go ahead and just say it, their donuts are better than State Fair donuts.  No lie.  These mini donuts have indian spices and must be made from whole wheat flour because they are dark and delicious!  While you're there you have to try the Arnie Palmer (in a cup!) because they make that from scratch and it is fantastic.  I must admit though that I have never tried any of their other food.  The other food is stuff like "beef tongue tacos."  They do have a Bison burgers but it always seems to be sold out when I get there.  I have heard all their menu items are amazing, I just need to get the courage to try it.

Smack Shack
Twitter: Smack_Shack
Find them at: moving along Marquette
Favorite: Classic French Fries

The Smack Shack is the biggest truck I've seen!  They have 5 people working in the truck and two taking money out front.  They specialize in seafood - mostly lobster - which is why I haven't treid any of their main dishes.  I have heard though that the lobster rolls there are the best.  Someday when I bring Patrick there I can give you more info on the food.

Cupcake
Twitter: CupcakeOnTheGo
Find them at: Nicollet Mall and 10th
Favorite: Everything!

This truck is the greatest thing to happen to Nicollet Mall since Target.  Seriously, every cupcake they serve is amazing!  The flavors are always changing and the combinations are wonderful.  The people working are always super nice.  They also serve shots of frosting - which is awesomesauce.  If you follow Twitter closely you'll know when they are giving out free shots if you mention twitter.

Disney Costume Challenge - Belle - Victorian

This is the first one I would change the era of the dress, but I think it would work really well!  Beauty and the Beast has been done in every century of fashion.  I chose Civil War Victorian because I think that big bows, big hoops, and off the shoulder corsets would really work well.  I also have wanted to make a Civil War dress since the first time I saw Gone With the Wind.

I even have the pattern for this one already!  I'll have to make a few changes of course.  I'll also have to lose quite a few pounds since I bought this when I was a size 4 and they don't make the pattern any more!  Oh well, that's a good kick in the pants I say!

Disney Costume Challenge - Jane - Victorian

This is another one that is really easy to figure out, so it will probably be one of the first ones done.  I also really like Tarzan and have always loved Jane's character.  "I was saved by a flying wild man in a loincloth!"

Thanks to my handy dandy duo of the Historical Fashion guide and Google, I've determined this is an 1885 Victorian Dress.  Mostly.  The best part about this dress is that even Disney couldn't exaggerate the butt to traditional size!

I love big butts.

Disney Costume Challenge - Snow White - Elizabethan

This whole thing started when Patrick and I were watching Snow White this weekend and I thought that he costume would easily transform into a historical reproduction.  For the most part it is already quite Elizabethan.  I'm no scholar, but it seems like sleeves and a farthingale would just about do it!

This is what I imagine her dress to look like.  I would make the bodice more blue but I would really like to keep some detail like this.  I would also need to add a collar.

This dress is a historic reproduction by Theresa Blake.  You can find her website here: http://www.rossetti.vispa.com/elizabethan.html

New Costume Challenge

Ive decided to give myself a lifelong costume challenge.  I am going to create each of the Disney Princess dresses in a more historical fashion.  For instance, I'm going to start by making Snow White a bit more Elizabethan.  Her dress is already quite Elizabethan but I'm gonna go all out.  I plan on this taking a lifetime, so it is nothing that will be done soon.  Also, I'm not just going to stick to the Princesses either, I plan on getting just about everyone in the game.

13 days left

I actually completed what I wanted to today!  And I have time to spare so I'm going to post some pictures and get back to it!

All boning is in, I just have to sew the top and add the grommets.

These are all done and good to go!  I decided that like the corset, all undergarments will be white with pink.

The only thing left here is to hand sew the top.  That will wait until I feel like sitting for a while.

The skirt over the pannier with the stomacher in place.  Just look at those fashionable child-bearing hips!

14 days left

I have 14 days to finish my dress and today I made the executive decision to change the dress.  Crazy I know, but after looking more into the history of my dress I decided that it just wouldn't be a ball gown with the panniers.  The panniers give some extra oomph to the hips.  Mine are not going to be huge or complicated.  Here what they look like with the other undergarments.

I also decided that instead of making the top one whole bodice with a zipper in the back, I will make a stomacher and the rest will be a sort of jacket.  This fits the time period much better.  The stomacher (front piece) will be pinned to my corset and the jacket will then also be pinned in place.  I think this will actually make the dress easier to make too, since I won't have to fit as many pieces.

I hope to finish the pannier, stomacher, and skirt underskirt tomorrow.  We'll see how that goes.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Today I finished reading Jane Eyre.  It's a weird feeling finishing this book, I feel like I lost a friend.  I considered reading it again right away but figured my husband might want some time with me.  Last thing I need is him getting jealous of a book.  But this wasn't just any book you see, this was the greatest book I have ever read.  That is why I miss it so!  This book drew me in like no other and made me feel what no other book has made me feel.

I recommend everyone read this book especially women - not girls, but women.  I know that if I had read this book when I was in high school it would not have meant as much to me as it does now.

There are many themes to this book that I would like to touch on - mostly because I can't wait until book club meets to talk about it.  I must share my thoughts with the world!  Or at least the two people who read my blog.  Here are the themes: Morality, God and Religion, Social class, Gender, Love and Passion, Independence, Forgiveness, Home and Family.

Morality
From the very beginning of the book, Jane is concerned about death.  This is, in part, due to the fact that she is living with her Aunt and Cousins only because her late Uncle made his wife promise on his deathbed that she would take in Jane Eyre and raise her as her own child.  Jane's Aunt, Mrs. Reed, of course did not raise her with a loving and caring heart and eventually Jane was sent off to Lowood, a charity school for girls.  Here she meets Helen who soon becomes good friends with Jane.  Helen comes down with tuberculosis and dies in her sleep.  She tells Jane that she is not afraid because she knows she is going to me her Father in Heaven.  At this time in her life, Jane cannot decide if she believes Helen or not.

God and Religion
After almost a decade at Lowood, Jane becomes a very devoted follower of Christ and is quite confident in her teachings.  Even with her confidence, she finds it difficult to balance a life between God and Passion.  We find though that she will always put God before herself when she chooses to run away from Thornfield instead of staying as Mr. Rochester's Mistress.  She is continually growing in her relationship with the Lord and knows firmly how she stands.

Social Class
Jane Eyre is given quite the ambiguous cast into society.  Although she was raised in a wealthy home, she is a dependent upon Mrs. Reed.  At this time in her life she has a hard time knowing her place.  After her time at Lowood she becomes a governess in a wealthy manor.  When friends of Mr. Rochester come to stay at the home they look upon her with total disregard and even talk about her in the foulest of tones right in front of her!  They do not feel that a governess should be allowed to be near them at all.

Gender
Through the story you get a sense of how men and women are supposed to act.  You also get a sense that Jane is not going to sit back and let men decide for her, starting with Mr. Brocklehurst.  Mr. Brocklehurst was doing his best to keep her down by telling the entire school that she is deceitful and should be ignored.  Luckily, Ms. Temple knows Mr. Brocklehurst's nature and gave Jane the chance to stand up for herself - and she did.  Jane didn't simply become what Mr. Brocklehurst wanted her to become, she stood up for herself and made something of her time in Lowood.  Jane later is proposed to by Mr. Rochester and St. John.  In the first instance it seems as though Mr. Rochester tried to trick her into a marriage and in the second St. John said it was her duty to marry him according to God's will.  In both instances, then men seemed to think they were entitled over the life of Jane.

Love and Passion
The love story is what carries us through the novel.  Jane is neglected of love early in life and seems to need none of it.  Her passion is enough for her.  Her passion is what keeps her strong while living under her Aunt's roof and gives her the courage to stand up to her before she leaves.  Although she does not actively seek love, she does find it and holds to it dearly.  First she finds love in her friend Helen Burns and literally clings to her until Helen is no longer.  She then falls in love with Mr. Rochester and has the most difficult time leaving him once she learned his secret.  She was so in love with him that she was almost willing to turn her back on her religion and stay with him.  Finally, she finds the love of family with the Rivers who remain with her through the end.  Through all this she keeps her passion for life.  This is what keeps her from marrying her cousin St. John.  He has no passion towards her and she needs love in a married, not merely convenience.

Independence
Jane knows that she is from a lower class even though she grew up in a wealthy home.  Although she may be poor, she refuses to be a dependent.  She will not accept handouts and will only be given what she has earned.  This is what makes the story of her begging from door-to-door, asking for food, so difficult to read.  Jane was truly humbled when she had to ask people for help - something she had avoided doing her entire life.  When she later comes back to Mr. Rochester she is more glad than ever to marry him not only because he is widowed, but because they are equals.  Jane had acquired enough money to sustain herself and would no longer be Mr. Rochester's dependent.

Forgiveness
Mr. Rochester has a great need for forgiveness - although he doesn't know how to ask for it.  He feels that marrying a good person such as Jane will atone for his past life and rid him of his demons.  Eventually his demons come out and all is taken away from him.  In the end, he loses his home, sight, and hand.  Only when he is seemingly left with nothing, does he come to God and ask for forgiveness.  It brings to mind the verse that Jesus once said about sin.  "If your right hand sins, cut it off.  Better to lose a hand than the whole body."

Home and Family
Although Jane seeks independence, she also seeks a sense of belonging.  This is why she excelled in school, at Thornfield and with The River's.  She had a sense of belonging while still being independent.

After reading the book, I immediately needed to see the movie.  I had high hopes for the movie because I loved the cast, I thought each of them looked almost exactly as I imagined - although Mr. Rochester was bit too handsome.  So I set out for the movie ASAP and it pains me to report that the movie is horrible!  They took out all religion and social undertones which just left it as an empty love story.  This love story means nothing if you don't realize that Jane left Mr. Rochester because of her devotion to God.  It also means nothing if you don't realize that she comes back to him because it is such a big deal in that day and age to be independent and wealthy!  The movie hardly made any sense!

Obviously, I am upset.  So I set out to find a movie that would do.  The next movie I picked up was actually the BBC TV series from the 80's.  It was fantastic!  Of course the cinematic quality left something to be desired, but the acting and storyline was all there.  I would highly recommend this version.  The book was followed almost exactly, which made me love it all the more.  There were some scenes that were cut short, mostly the love scenes actually, which is quite the 180 from the movie.  Next I plan on getting the BBC TV series from 2006 - I can only hope that the story line stays the same and all that changes are the costumes and quality!

Bummer

20 days to go.  I bought the fabric to use as a liner - it ended up being one of the more expensive fabrics.  So far I have done a really good job of finding fabrics on sale, but in this case I had no luck.  On the other hand, when 3.99 a yard is the expensive stuff, I think I have done pretty well so far.

In the words of Inspector Clouseau, "There is a beump, in the rhoad."  As you may recall, I hate cutting out fabric.  Well, as I am about to cut out the fabric for my skirt I realized that instead of being able to cut out 2 pieces at a time, I have to do them one-by-one because of the pattern!  Major suckage.  Looks like I'll be cutting out the dress pieces for a while now.

We've got the biggest balls of them all!

On May 21st the Guthrie Theater is hosting a Costumed Ball Dance Party and I need to be there.  So I have 21 days to get my butt moving and make a ball gown.  I've decided to make a gown to match the masque my brother gave me from Italy.  This will definitely be my biggest costume undertaking thus far, but luckily I was recently introduced to the Minnesota Society of Costumers.  MNSOC is full of people excited to help out a fellow costumer, which is good, because I need a lot of help.  My costume can be broken into two parts - the dress and the undergarments.

Undergarments:
I've already started working on a corset.  I have the fabric cut and the channels for the boning sewn, now I just have to wait for further instruction.  I'm making the corset using the Elizabethan Corset Generator.  Although my dress is not Elizabethan, this is probably the best and most comfortable corset to use.

I also need to make a chemise and drawers, but those are easy so I'm saving them for the end.

Dress:
The main part of the dress is a brown satin/taffeta with small fleur de lis all over.  The front is a gold fabric with flowers.  For the inside of the sleeves I have a ivory cotton with light brown music notes and lines - to match the masque.  Since it is a party, I wanted the dress to be more fun than formal and that is why I added the music notes.  I've bought the outer fabric and just need to buy the lining.  It should be known that cutting out fabric is my least favorite part of costuming and usually the main speed-bump.

It should be interesting to see how this dress comes together.  It could either be a great success or an enormous disaster - but I'm sure it will not fall anywhere in between.

A Coffee Community

I recently joined the corporate world doing a job I was made for - administrative assistant.  I love my job, but it definitely requires a cup of coffee every morning because you are constantly on your toes.  My 8:30 coffee run has become quite the ritual and I don't know what I would do without it.  I almost always make this coffee run with a coworker - which got me thinking about the social side effects of coffee.

Coffee is the perfect drink to get while chatting.  You're expecting an energy buzz from the caffeine so you're already feeling better, and then add in the fact that you're socializing and boom!  Winning.  Your day has significantly improved before you even took the first sip.

The act of getting the coffee is soothing to many in the corporate world I've found.  It is a chance to slip away from the desk for a moment and collect your thoughts - whether about work or home.  I like to get coffee because it makes me think through my day while not working on something else - multitasking doesn't always work best.  Getting coffee also makes you physically move around, unless of course your coffee is just in the other room.  I highly recommend going outside your office for a cup of Joe once in a while - it will do you wonders!

Some of us though, don't always have someone to get a cup of coffee with.  Well do not fear!  It just so happens that coffee houses are usually more sociable than the local bar!  I have struck up so many random conversations in a coffee house and I absolutely loved every one of them.  One morning I was preparing for an interview and some random guy in a suit asked me what I was doing and it just so happened that he worked in the same industry so he was able to give me some pointers.  As a barista I've been given the chance to hear so many interesting stories.

I guess what I'm trying to get to is that you should go out and socialize - and if you need some liquid courage, try coffee.  When you're hopped up on caffeine rather than liquor, you're less likely to make an ass of yourself.

Wild Game!

Last night Patrick took me to my first ever NHL game.  I've seen the Gophers, and I've seen the Moose, but I never had the chance to see the Wild.  Well this was it, and it was good.  The Wild won 1-4 and I got to see some great goals and fantastic saves.  I was really impressed by how much faster the games moves when you're there rather than watching on TV.  I loved it!  We got seats in the upper deck on center ice - it was a great view.  The nice part about the Excel is that no matter where you sit you have a great view.  The refs didn't let anyone fight and I didn't get to see any blood on the ice, but it was still a great experience.

The Wild warmed up in special National Guard jerseys

We had a great view right down the middle!

Pre-game

After the 2nd period we moved a little closer to the action.  Had some great guys with thick Minnesotan accents behind us which just made the experience better.

Wild Win!

Keeping an Open Mind

I'm a coffee snob, I'll admit it.  I take pride in being able to tell you all about my high priced, organic, shade grown, fair trade coffee's brightness, flavor tones, and more.  I will also admit though, that I drink gas station cappuccinos.  I can't keep this secret any longer.

Gas station coffee is good - when you're in a hurry.  There is no comparing it to the higher end coffee, but when you need a pick me up and are running low on cash and time, this is a good place to turn!  I don't really like their regular coffee, so I go for the "cappuccino" machine.  These are in no way real cappuccinos.  They bear a slight resemblance since they both have caffeine, but that is about it.  They are however, still quite tasty.  I love all the flavors and the fact that you can mix them up on your own!  Yes, I am the person that mixes all the different pops together at the soda fountain.

I also like fast food coffee.  McDonald's will make a pretty good mocha - and they even let you customize it a little.  If I need black coffee though I'm heading to Burger King where they serve "Seattle's Best" and it is actually one of the best cups of coffee even compared to Caribou or Starbucks.  If you prefer a stronger cup of coffee though head to McDonald's.  It has a brighter flavor while Burger King has a more mellow taste.

So don't feel shame when buying a quick cup of joe.  Isn't it all about the caffeine anyways?

Date Night

Our date nights are simple, not because I like simple things, but because I like dates and its a lot easier to have a lot of dates when they are simple.

Drink: Pinot Grigio by Black Swan
I have never been much of a wine person, but in the last couple years I have started to try more and more.  I've realized that I like white wines with a bit of citrus flavor.  You get this citrus flavor from wines made in Australia, which is where Black Swan is made.  This wine was only $6.99 and for the price I would say it was pretty good.  It was as exciting as some other Pinot Grigio wines I've had but I liked it enough to finish the bottle on my own.  Oh yeah, Patrick doesn't like wine so he got a Gatorade, which he likes, so it's all good.

Appetizer: Cheese Curds & Apples
If you didn't already know this, apples go really well with cheese.  I don't know why, I just know they do.  I really like cheese so I wanted to go with a fancy cheese, but this was not a fancy date night.  So I went for the good ol' Wisconsin Cheese Curds.  You just can't go wrong with cheese curds, especially when your date is with a Wisconsin man.

Dinner: Garlic Chicken Pizza with Alfredo Sauce
A white sauce pizza is my favorite especially with spinach and chicken.  I have yet to be able to make a decent pizza so all of ours come out of a box.  This was Culinary Circle brand which I highly recommend!  I have never had one of their pizzas that I didn't like.  The other part that makes our pizza so good is the Pampered Chef Pizza Stone!  Another thing that I would highly recommend if you like softer crust.  Our pizza was a thin crust which usually ends up too crispy for us, but with this pizza stone it cooks just right.

Dessert: Heart Shaped Sugar Cookies
For some reason I can't make cookies.  It's really stupid.  I can make truffles and intricate cakes, but I can't make a simple sugar cookie.  So we buy these too.  Which is alright because it means that for our Date Night I had hardly any cooking to do!

Our Date Nights are always paired with a movie.  We have decided to go through our "10 Must See Musicals" to make sure that we are really happy with what we have.  So we started with #10 Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.  We had more time and nothing better to do so we also watched #9 The Phantom of the Opera.

It was a good night.
